Artistry in Life: A Personal Journey Through Creativity

The world is a canvas painted with a million colors by countless artists, each adding their unique touch. In my life, I have been blessed/cursed with an abundance of artistic influences, each shaping who I am as a person and artist in my own right.

Family Artistry

My journey through artistry begins in my family. My father, the fiddler, and my mother, the pianist and cook, both brought creativity into our lives. My father’s musical talents and my mother’s cooking echoed the beauty and art of nature’s creations. Their influence extended even further; my mother’s father was a Dutch artist, and her great-grandfather was a painter, both passing down a rich legacy of artistic heritage.

Personal Experiences and Discoveries

One of the most intriguing experiences I had was working with a theatrical individual. This person approached every role as though it were a character in a play, honing their technique with every performance. They were committed to the art, and it was fascinating to observe the depth of their dedication and transformation.

My professional life has also been a tapestry of artistic encounters. I have worked closely with artists spanning various fields—comics, producers, and rock stars. Additionally, I have collaborated with individuals in tech and communications who demonstrate exceptional creativity in their work. These interactions have enriched my understanding of what it means to be an artist and have fueled my own creative endeavors.

Artistry in Relationships

My relationships with loved ones have been intertwined with artistry. My older brother, John, achieved recognition as an architect, designing prestigious structures like hospital and medical clinics, a luxurious Hilton Hotel, and even a pet hospital. My first wife was a prominent artist whose works resonated across the country and even overseas. My current wife continues to create with leaves, clothing, beads, and jewelry, each piece telling a unique story.

Lastly, my partner and I perform together in small groups and bands, act in plays and musicals, and sing at memorials, retirement events, and birthdays. I play the guitar, a reminder of the constant symphony of creativity that surrounds me.

The Influence of Artists

Artistry isn’t just about creating something new; it’s about channeling something already present in the world. Just as God created the countless wonders on Earth—animals, plants, terrains, foods, and seasons—humans are co-creators, adding to this grand masterpiece. My artistic friends and family have all played a role in shaping my taste and sensibilities, enriching my life with their creativity.

When defining the ‘most artistic’ in my life, it’s impossible to pinpoint one individual. Each person has their unique form of creativity. My mother, who was a painter, my ex-husband, a sax player, my daughter and brother who draw, and my sister who does stained glass—all contribute to the tapestry of my existence. Each of them has taught me something valuable and has influenced my journey as an artist.

Making judgments on the extent of their artistry is irrelevant; the act of recognizing and appreciating their creativity is the true measure of my appreciation. I am grateful for the impact they’ve had on my life and celebrate the rich array of artistic expressions that enrich my world.
