Discovering My Bliss: A Secluded Haven Amidst the Bustle of Madrid
After embarking on an extensive journey of exploration and self-discovery in my twenties, I came to realize that there are distinctly two modes of travel: one fast-paced and another deeply immersive. This realization helped me appreciate the nuances of both approaches and the profound impact each had on shaping my understanding and connection to different places.
Two Distinct Modes of Travel
The first mode, beloved by many backpackers, involves hopping from one place to another, immersing oneself in a variety of cultures and enjoying a whirlwind of experiences. Such travel allows one to marvel at incredible natural sights and landmarks, but often leaves one struggling to truly understand and feel a sense of place.
The second mode, which I have found deeply enriching, involves longer stays, allowing one to live in the same area for a few months or more, and to delve deeply into its everyday life and nuances. Both modes have their advantages, but one mode often resonates more strongly, depending on personal preferences and goals.
Two Times in Foreign Lands
When asked about my favorite place on earth, my mind immediately goes to two times I lived in foreign countries for extended periods: my exchange semester in Tallinn, Estonia, and the time I spent in Madrid, Spain, writing my master's thesis remotely.
During my exchange semester in Tallinn, Estonia, the city grew close to my heart. I met many individuals who have become dear friends, and I experienced the enchantment of a real winter again, which was marvelous. The city isn't just special for its rich history and charm, but also for the people who made it memorable. However, as much as I love Tallinn and recommend a visit, I believe it's the connections and experiences that make a place truly special, not solely the place itself.
Discovering Myself in Madrid
The second experience, living in Madrid, Spain, was transformative for me. It's not because Madrid is exceptionally beautiful, but because of what it gave me; it was a city where I rediscovered my true self. It felt like a second home, a place where I found clarity and purpose.
Winter days in Madrid, with the sun shining through the Parque del Retiro, provided a sense of calm and inner reflection. It was during these moments that I pondered my future and the path forward after completing my master's degree. Madrid became a haven for deep introspection and personal growth, and it's these moments that make Madrid hold a special place in my heart.
Why Madrid?
Madrid was a place that allowed me to connect deeply with myself and find a sense of belonging and clarity during a pivotal moment in my life. Because of this, if I had to choose my favorite place on earth, it would undoubtedly be Madrid. It wasn't just the city that transformed me, but the city that helped me feel truly at home, amidst the hustle and bustle of life.
