Emotions Weaved into Art: A Journey Through Quilting
Quilting is more than just an art form; it's a personal journey that often carries deep emotional connections. One such journey was started by my beloved mother, who introduced me to the world of quilting through a computer program. This craft, with its vibrant colors and intricate designs, has served as a medium to express and preserve my emotions, especially during times of personal significance.
Starting the Quilting Journey
My mother was the one who ignited the passion for quilting in me. She recognized my love for creativity and decided to gift me with a computer program that allowed me to design my very own quilts. The opportunity was thrilling, and I immediately dove into the process of creating my first quilt. The pattern I chose was a small table runner, which I originally made for a local business location, but later blew up to create a curtain. Each piece of my quilt was meticulously designed, transforming the digital pattern into a tangible and heartfelt creation.
Creating the Curtain: A Memorial to a Lost Place
One of my notable projects included a curtain created from a pattern found on the website of a local business called Joan’s. When the business closed down, I decided to turn the unused pattern into a meaningful piece. The curtain was made from fabric scraps that were leftover from my work in the 1990s. Back then, I was employed by a company that specialized in creating sign holders and shopping mall decorations, including table covers. We sourced our fabric from a company in Texas, but I learned that we could easily make these table covers ourselves. As a result, I found a local company to do the sewing, and we supplied them with fabric by the bolt. This local company would cut 6' and 8' table covers, leaving behind scraps that I began to collect under my worktable.
Preserving Nostalgia through Fabric Scraps
The fabric scraps I found in my work area were invaluable. They were remnants of the vibrant and colorful fabrics I used for the table covers. These scraps not only provided the materials for my curtain but also served as a form of nostalgia. By using these leftover pieces, I was able to retain a piece of that era and its memories. The fabric from the table covers, with their unique patterns and hues, brought a sense of warmth and familiarity to my modest home.
Although these scraps were small, they were precious to me. They brought back memories of hard work, collaboration, and the creativity that defined my work life. The process of piecing together the curtains from these small remnants was therapeutic and allowed me to connect with the past in a tangible way.
Reflections and the Way Forward
After completing these projects, I found myself growing more and more attached to the idea of quilting. The personal touches and the narrative within each piece I created added layers of meaning to my work. These quilts, curtains, and other fabric art pieces became more than just projects; they were a symbol of creativity and emotional connections.
While I eventually lost interest in quilting after this period, the memories and the emotional connection remain. The art of quilting taught me about the power of creativity and the significance of preserving memories through small, personal touches. Whether it was the blown-up table runner or the sentimental curtain, each piece carries a story of my past and my journey.
