Essential Improvements for Your Next Bathroom Remodel
When it comes to renovating your bathroom, the level of effort and expense can vary widely. Whether you're looking to budget-friendly options or a complete gut job, there are several key improvements that can elevate your space and enhance your daily routine. This guide will help you understand the different levels of remodeling and provide insights into essential upgrades worth considering.
Levels of Effort and Expense in Bathroom Remodeling
Renovating your bathroom means evaluating three primary levels of effort and expense:
Low: This level includes simple tasks such as re-painting the walls, installing new light fixtures, replacing outlet covers, and adding new window coverings. This level typically costs under $500. Medium: This level builds upon the low level by adding new fixtures such as a vanity, faucet, and possibly a new toilet. The overall cost is likely to be around $2000. High: A complete gut job involves a more extensive renovation, including a new tile floor, tub, shower fittings, and a glass shower door. The cost can range from $6000 to $20000.Essential Improvements to Consider
Whether you're undertaking a minor refresh or a full-scale renovation, there are several improvements that can enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your bathroom:
Seamless/One-Piece Toilets
A seamless or one-piece toilet can provide a cleaner and more modern appearance. These toilets blend seamlessly with the bathroom suite, making them a popular choice for those aiming for a contemporary look. They are also easier to clean and maintain due to their smooth surface.
At Least One Bathtub
A bathtub is a luxurious addition that can transform your bathroom into a spa-like retreat. Consider including at least one bathtub to enjoy a relaxing soak or a luxurious bath under the stars. Bathtubs come in various styles, including freestanding and built-in, and can be modern or classic, depending on your preferences.
Shower Window
Incorporating a shower window or door can bring natural light into your bathroom and create an open and airy feel. This feature also makes the bathroom feel more spacious and airy, which is especially beneficial in smaller spaces. Ensure that the window or door is properly sealed to maintain the bathroom's moisture level.
Updated Lighting
Lighting is vital in any bathroom as it affects mood and functionality. Consider installing modern lighting fixtures such as sconces, recessed lighting, or led strip lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Layered lighting options, such as recessed lighting, vanity lights, and accent lighting, can help improve functionality and create a stylish look.
Innovative Storage Solutions
Storage is a critical aspect of any bathroom remodel. Innovative storage solutions like roll-out drawers, built-in shelves, and under-sink cabinets can help maximize space and keep your bathroom organized. These features make it easy to store toiletries, towels, and other essentials without cluttering the space.
Waterproof Materials
Using waterproof materials such as porcelain tiles, seamless concrete, or waterproof synthetic tiles can enhance the durability and appeal of your bathroom. These materials are easy to clean, durable, and resistant to water damage, making them ideal for bathroom renovations.
Conceptualizing a Spa-Like Bathroom
By incorporating these essential improvements, you can transform your bathroom into a functional spa-like retreat. The key is to prioritize your needs and preferences, ensuring that the space is both beautiful and practical. Whether you opt for a low, medium, or high-level remodel, remember that every improvement counts towards creating a dream bathroom.
Professional Tips for Bathroom Renovation
While some homeowners can tackle small repairs and refreshes themselves, more extensive renovations often require professional help. As a builder, my experience with bathroom remodels has taught me that anything is possible, depending on the scope of the project. Currently, I am deep into a bathroom renovation, and the room is down to studs and subfloor, making it easy to implement plumbing, electrical, and architectural changes.
Before installing a new vanity and sink, I am upgrading the plumbing from old drum style traps to new P-style traps under the bathtub and sink. I am also reinforcing the joists and replacing the valves and piping. The old copper piping with 2 valve controls is being replaced with PEX and a single mix valve. Even considering radiant heat floors, which would be a wonderful addition in the winter, is part of the project.
The sky is the limit when it comes to what you want to upgrade in your bathroom. From seamless toilets and bathtubs to innovative storage solutions and updated lighting, there are endless possibilities. By focusing on these essential improvements, you can bring your vision to life and create the functional and stylish bathroom of your dreams.
