Evolving Preferences and Discontinued Subscriptions on YouTube and News Outlets
As content platforms evolve, so do our preferences and the channels we subscribe to. This article explores the reasons behind the discontinuation of popular YouTube channels and the shift in news outlet preferences, discussing the factors that influence such decisions.
Why Discontinued Subscriptions to Channel Awesome?
One of the channels that has stood out in the streaming video landscape is Channel Awesome. For years, it has been a popular destination for movie reviews and entertainment content. The channel, known for its low-key silly and badly acted movie reviews, was a favorite among viewers such as myself. However, in the wake of sexual harassment allegations, abuse of power, and overall toxic work culture, the channel lost its appeal.
In 2023, the issue came to light when former employees published a detailed account of the toxic environment and egregious behavior that had been systemic within the channel. The revelations led to a significant drop in subscribers and an overall shift in public opinion. My personal journey with Channel Awesome ended when I read the detailed accounts of the abuse. I found it impossible to continue watching their content without processing the knowledge of what had occurred. As a result, I unsubscribed and chose to direct my attention towards channels that promote a more positive and engaging environment.
Alternative channels such as Lindsay Ellis, famous for visually engaging and personally relatable reviews, and Folding Ideas, renowned for automated humor, have become my new favorites. Their content has renewed my interest and engagement on YouTube, reflecting a change in my personal media preferences.
Why Quitting News Outlets and Cable TV?
The decision to discontinue subscriptions and engagements with certain news outlets is often driven by a desire for unbiased and factual information. In recent times, a deep distrust in mainstream media has led many to seek alternative sources of information. Cord-cutters and news enthusiasts have become more selective about the information they consume, often favoring independent publishers and local news networks.
I ceased my subscription to CNN, MSNBC, LATimes, and other similar news outlets due to a growing sense of disillusionment with the political narratives they promote. These networks have become polarized, often lacking objectivity and frequently indulging in propaganda. The bias inherent in their content has led to a loss of trust. The last straw for me was when my local news channel, Fox, started regularly trotting out progressive commentators, which soured me on the channel's editorial stance.
In the absence of preferred channels, I find myself disengaged from regular cable TV watching. Instead, I seek out sources of news and entertainment that align with my values and provide a balanced perspective. The current landscape of news consumption is marked by a fragmentation of media, with viewers like myself gravitating towards more niche and trustworthy platforms.
To sum up, both personal and political factors have played a critical role in the decisions to discontinue subscriptions to certain YouTube channels and news outlets. The shift towards more optically engaging and positively themed content on YouTube and a more trusted and unbiased approach in news sourcing underscores a broader trend in media consumption patterns.
