Gratitude for Human Kindness: Two Nighttime Experiences
Two distinct nighttime incidents have taught me the profound value of human kindness and the importance of staying safe in challenging situations. These experiences have underscored the innate humanity in individuals who offer their help, often without any expectation of reward.
Emergency Help from Law Enforcement
Earlier this month, I was traveling from Ranchi to Patna by train. Unfortunately, the journey was delayed by two hours, and the train arrived at 11:10 pm, much later than the scheduled time of 10:16 pm. By the time I reached the station exit, it was well past midnight, and I mistakenly exited from the wrong gate. Frustrated and disoriented, I called my best friend and continued walking towards my home, which was a 15 to 20-minute walk away.
The neighborhood was slightly dark, but still had a few street vendors. I began my journey, silently praying for safe passage. Suddenly, a Zomato biker and then a vehicle with three occupants cast their involuntary stares towards me, which initially did not phase me. However, around two minutes later, a police van rolled by, and two male and a female police officer was patrolling the area at night. As I turned to them, I felt relieved. They immediately asked me where I was going and instructed me to sit in their van. They also advised me to put my phone in my bag and provided other safety instructions.
Within minutes, I safely arrived at my home and expressed my gratitude to the police officers. This experience reinforced my belief in the goodness and selflessness of humans who stand by those in need, especially during emergencies.
Support When Medications Reacted
Another significant experience that stands out is from a few days ago. I've been undergoing medical treatment and recently had to switch to a higher dosage of prescribed medications. Today, a reaction to one of these medications caused me to feel extremely dizzy and passed out in the middle of a class. I immediately informed my professor and left the classroom, where a fellow student and two others accompanied me outside to provide support.
With my body still cold and sweating profusely, I vomited the medications I had consumed. One of my batchmates ran to fetch the college's medical officer. She heard my conversation with the doctor and understood the situation. Despite not knowing me personally, the medical officer checked my blood pressure and asked what I had eaten last night. I mentioned the PG Food I had consumed, but deliberately omitted the fact that I had taken a higher dose of medication that night.
She immediately administered some regular medication to me and gave me words of encouragement, reminding me of my responsibilities as a student in a big city where my parents are not present. All three students stayed with me throughout the process, sacrificing their class time to ensure my safety. Their selflessness and concern were overwhelming, and it made me realize the strength of human compassion.
Conclusion
Reflecting on these two instances, I am deeply grateful for the kindness of complete strangers and close acquaintances who came together to help during these emergencies. These experiences have shown me that, despite occasional reports of negativity and hostility, the majority of humans possess a deep well of humanity. It is these acts of compassion that make the world a safer and more welcoming place. We should always be mindful and appreciative of such gestures, and strive to pay it forward whenever we can.
