Guide to Moving Top-Loading Washers and Dryers Efficiently
Living in apartments or changing homes often requires moving various household appliances, including top-loading washers and dryers. This guide provides step-by-step instructions and equipment recommendations to make the process easier and more efficient.
Preparation Before Moving
Before starting the move:
Disconnect the dryers vent and electric plug: Ensure you have enough space to access the dryer vent and disconnect the electric plug.
Unplug the washer: Always unplug the washer from the electric supply to avoid any electrical issues during the move.
Disconnect the hoses: Turn off the water supply to the washer by turning the faucets clockwise and disconnect the hoses securely.
Tip Out the Washer
Once you have the washer, follow these steps to safely move it:
Standing to one side: Stand to the side of the washer and tip it towards yourself. This will transfer most of the weight to one of the rubber feet, making it easier to reposition.
Repeating the process: Tip the washer a little more to put the weight onto another set of feet and continue walking it out.
Using a scrap carpet: Once you have enough room, use a scrap of old carpet (about 30 inches wide and 6-8 feet long) laid pile side down near the appropriate feet. Slide the end of the carpet under the washer as far as possible and walk the other two feet onto the carpet. Now, you can 'tow' the washer around by pulling the end of the carpet.
Moving the Washer and Dryer Safely
For additional support and efficiency, consider renting or purchasing a hand truck. Here are some options:
Hand Truck
Wrap around straps for added stability and control
Slide under the corners of appliances with thin nylon sliders with a rubber face.
Rock the appliance back for transport in the tilted position.
A hand truck can be rented at Home Depot to ensure you have the right equipment for the move.
Piano Dolly
A flat dolly or piano dolly is taller and may need support with plywood for recessed appliances.
Does not require rocking the appliance as it sits level and is easier for making turns or going through doorways.
Considering the weight and size of top-loading washers and dryers, it's often necessary to use more than one hand truck or piano dolly for moving these appliances. If a hand truck is not sufficient, a dolly or hand truck with sliders might be required.
Additional Tips
When moving these heavy appliances, it's wise to have a helper to assist you. For more challenging situations, such as moving down stairs, over door thresholds, or moving long distances, a hand truck or dolly would be the most effective option.
Proper planning and the right equipment can make the process of moving your top-loading washer and dryer much smoother and less stressful. By following these steps and utilizing the recommended tools, you can ensure a safe and efficient move.
