How to Reset Your Alexa Echo Device: A Comprehensive Guide

Whether you're dealing with an unresponsive device or preparing to sell it off, knowing how to reset your Alexa Echo device is crucial. This guide walks you through the steps to reset different generations of Alexa Echo devices, ensuring they work properly or are ready for a new owner.

General Reset Procedure for Unresponsive Devices

If you're experiencing issues with your Alexa Echo and it's not responding, follow these steps:

Unplug the power adapter from the device or outlet and wait for 10 seconds. Plug it back in. If the device still doesn't respond, proceed with the factory reset. Press and hold the Action button for 20 seconds. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again. Your device enters setup mode. Follow the instructions available at Set Up Your Echo.

Note: When you reset your device, your smart home devices will remain connected. If resetting isn't helpful or you no longer wish to use the device, deregister it from your Amazon account. Deregistering erases all device settings.

Resetting 3rd or 4th Generation Alexa Echo Devices

If your Alexa Echo 3rd or 4th generation device isn't responding, first try restarting it:

Unplug the power adapter from the device or the outlet and wait for 10 seconds. Plug it back in. If the issue persists, reset your device: Press and hold the Action button for 20 seconds. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again. Your device enters setup mode.

Note: When you reset your device, your smart home devices remain connected.

Resetting 1st Generation Amazon Echo or Echo Dot

Although Amazon may have ceased production of the 1st generation Amazon Echo and Echo Dot, you can still purchase secondhand options. Resetting is especially useful if you're selling or giving the device to someone else.

Get a paperclip or a similar clip. Locate the reset button on your Echo or Echo Dot. Use the clip to press and hold the Reset button. The echo ring will change colors. When it becomes orange, you've successfully reset your device. Reinstall your Echo/ Echo Dot: Open the Alexa app on your tablet or smartphone. Tap the Devices icon in the bottom right corner of the device. Press Add Device. Select Alexa from the list. Choose Amazon Echo or Echo Dot.
