Is the Decline of Handmade Skills a Myth in the Age of Fast Fashion?

Introduction to Handmade Skills

Throughout various generations, the ability to use a sewing machine, knit, or crochet has played a significant role in clothing construction and care. In my generation, we were taught these crafts because we didn't have the resources to buy the latest and greatest disposables. We valued and cared for our garments due to the time and effort we put into them. However, with the rise of fast fashion, these handmade skills faced a potential decline. Nevertheless, I believe these crafts are experiencing a resurgence.

The Rise of Handmade Crafts

It was during the period of fast fashion that we witnessed a shift in consumer behavior. Fast, cheap, and trendy clothing became the norm, leading to less care and a lower valuation of garments over time. However, in recent years, I have observed a significant upsurge in the revival of handmade clothing and other crafts. This resurgence can be attributed to various factors, including rising prices and an increasing amount of time spent at home. For example, last summer, I taught a teen how to embroider a design onto her denim jacket, inspired by a more expensive piece she saw in a boutique.

Teaching Handmade Skills

Pre-pandemic, I had the opportunity to teach knitting to a group of young men in a middle school mentoring program. A retired man who led the group also participated in and enjoyed the activity. I incorporated stories about the history of knitting, illustrating how even "manly" men have engaged in this craft, turning the knitting lessons into history lessons. As the boys mastered the basics, it was gratifying to see the calming effect it had on them. These boys came from less-than-ideal backgrounds, and our group provided a safe and nurturing environment for them to learn.

Is Hand Sewing, Knitting, or Crocheting Declining?

Based on various perspectives, it seems that these handmade skills have not declined as drastically as one might assume. While some might argue that they are waning due to the appeal of mass-produced clothing, I believe every handcrafted skill can experience periods of popularity and decline. For instance, macrame was immensely popular in the 1970s, experienced a decline in the following decades, and is now experiencing a resurgence. I firmly believe that there will always be individuals committed to preserving and passing down these important skills.

Factors Contributing to the Resurgence

While I don't have specific statistics to support my claims, I do acknowledge the accessibility and affordability of mass-produced clothing. Buying items from stores is often cheaper and faster, making it a more attractive option for those struggling to make ends meet. Due to the overwhelming demands of work, young people may not have the time or patience to learn handmade skills. However, the internet offers a wealth of free instruction, making it easier for those who are interested to learn.

Personal Experience with Handmade Skills

With over 40 years of experience in sewing, crocheting, and occasional knitting, I recently started learning macrame. I am excited to incorporate this new skill into my creative designs. Personally, while sewing can be challenging, knitting and crocheting come more naturally to me. Regardless of preference, the resurgence of handmade skills is evident, and there are numerous opportunities for enthusiasts to learn and practice these crafts.
