Managing Clutter and Embracing Organization in Your Home

Introduction to the Struggle with Home Organization

Every home has its own corners that resist attempts to maintain a tidy environment. For instance, in many households, the garage stands out as a prime example of clutter, especially when it’s not well-organized. Sure, without a basement and considering the floor level, the garage is where my husband keeps tools and equipment, but this area continues to be a source of frustration and visual chaos. It makes me crazy!

Organization Challenges in the Kitchen

The kitchen, arguably the heart of the home, often faces similar challenges to the garage. Every time someone plops down an item on the counter, it stays there, creating a persistent visual clutter. For visual learners like me, trying to research and compile information makes it hard to keep paperwork neatly organized. However, I have improved my filing system. Incoming bills are cycled through a large hanging file pocket just until they are entered into the checkbook or paid. This method greatly reduces the amount of clutter compared to a visual 3 horizontal basket method.

Strategies for Crafting and Sewing Projects

Crafting and sewing projects can quickly become overwhelming if not managed properly. I now have clear craft boxes for each upcoming project, making it easy to see what is in each box and only pulling out the necessary ones. I have three pattern boxes with all my patterns, and two large cloth laundry bags for material for my next projects. Currently, I am quilting hot pads for my local American Legion and also making a variety of small dolls. Next, I plan to work on some mixed medium wall hangs. These projects, though enjoyable, can similarly become unmanageable without a solid storage system.

Challenges in the Kitchen and Office Area

The kitchen, being the most used room in my home, never fails to remind me of the constant need for cleaning. It is an area where dishes are always getting dirtied. The office area, located in what used to be the dining room, is open and adjacent to the kitchen, housing the pantry. Although it isn’t dirty, it’s yet to reach a visually neat appearance that I desire. Ongoing, I have to constantly clean off my counters.

Physical Constraints and Adaptation

Physical limitations play a significant role in organizing my home. Currently, I can only lift one pound and cannot get up off the floor, which means I am gradually simplifying and adapting my organizational methods for optimal use considering my limitations. The adjacent kitchen area and floors are kept clean, ensuring that my office area remains tidy as well.
