My Oasis: Discovering the Room I Spend the Most Time in

When reflecting on the rooms in my home, one stands out as my primary sanctuary—one that I cherish and value immensely. Beyond the conventional areas like the living room and bedroom, my small but remarkably versatile home holds a special place that I call my ldquo;shop.rdquo;

The Shop: My Personal Retreat and Haven

The shop is more than just a room; it is a space where I carve out a piece of my soul and indulge in my passions. This area, which doubles as a workspace, entertainment center, and even a haven for relaxation, is my purview. No one else is allowed in this sanctified space, and it serves as a haven where I can breathe, think, and work in peace.

Here, I can immerse myself in woodworking projects, bask in the glow of a 65-inch TV, nap under the shade of a hammock, or simply grab a beer from the mini fridge. This dual-purpose room also saves and sketches future ideas, one of which is building a racing skiff that I saw in a magazine over 15 years ago. With a Master's degree in mechanical engineering and a recent retirement, I'm now grappling with the nuances of leisure and downtime.

The shop also gains an upgrade from time to time, like when I'm currently restoring a 1967 Corvette. Outside the shop, the rest of the house is sparsely used, but the 3600 square feet containing the kitchen, other storage, and occasional entries, provides a balance to this encapsulated haven.

The Living Room: A Space for Reflection and Family Time

Though the shop is my primary retreat, the living room brings a sense of warmth and camaraderie. This is the room where my big TV is, and where sliding glass doors open up to my backyard. During spring and summer, I spend much of my time on my deck, gazing at the greenery and enjoying the fresh air. In the colder months, I find refuge in the living room, nestled in a comfortable recliner, where I can work, relax, and unwind.

Strategically placed, this room houses my favorite cat pictures and vases with fresh flowers. The cats, my constant companions, also enjoy the space, making this room a haven for both humans and felines. The room symbolizes warmth, tranquility, and the joy shared with loved ones.

Backyard: A Seasonal Escape

The backyard is another cherished space, especially during the warmer months. For around four to five months, I can retreat to my deck, which is enveloped in the embrace of nature. The greenery and natural scenery are a perfect respite, providing a contrast to the indoor world. However, when the winter seasons return, the living room becomes my principal sanctuary, offering a cozy and inviting space to engage in activities and unwind.

My living room, especially with the company of my beloved cats, is a place where I can enjoy music and relaxation. It serves as a portal to joy and comfort, making it a highlight of my home life.

Conclusion

For many, the living room and bedroom are the primary spaces they spend time in. The former is often a hub for social gatherings, while the latter is the retreat for solitary moments. However, my personal journey has led me to find more solace in the shop and the living room, each serving as a unique and cherished space in my home. My story is one of finding comfort in simplicity and the joy of personal sanctuaries.
