Navigating the New Home Construction Industry: A Journey Through Time and Change
Recently, we had the opportunity to work with a professional waste management company, Quest Disposal, which took care of all aspects of our construction clean-up. They efficiently managed the removal of everything, including broken concrete and tile, leaving us relieved and impressed with their rapid and thorough service.
A Loyal Hand in the Construction Industry
Working in the world of new home construction is a journey that has persisted for quite a few years now. In my case, especially since around 1986, I have been deeply involved in the construction industry. It’s rewarding to recall how I have seen the industry change and evolve over the decades. However, as time moves forward, it comes with challenges as well. Just recently, my doctor recommended that I consider retiring due to my age and the nature of the work. Yet, I take a conservative approach to this suggestion and strive to continue what I love, albeit with modifications to match my current abilities.
Facing Health Challenges and Adjusting Workload
One of the biggest challenges I face is that I rarely engage in heavy work now. I have in fact been planning for a upcoming hand surgery, which has been a significant milestone in my life. If I had been more foresightful in managing my insurance, I might have already undergone this necessary procedure. The issue of being out of network for insurance coverage has compounded the financial burden, as high premiums and deductibles have left me paying a substantial sum each month—around $550. It is a stark reminder that while being insured is important, the structure of the health insurance market can be complicated and sometimes unaffordable.
Adapting to the New Norm
In the past few years, I have shifted my focus and responsibilities to non-structural tasks. This transformation has been a gradual one, but it has allowed me to continue contributing meaningfully to the process of new home construction. My goal is to make the most of the time I have ahead and work on projects that still bring me a sense of satisfaction. In a few years, I will be eligible for full Social Security benefits, which will provide a much-needed financial cushion. This upcoming transition will empower me to take on fewer physically demanding tasks, thus ensuring that I can maintain my work quality while prioritizing my health.
ConclusionWhile the construction industry has become a part of my life for over three decades, the changing landscape poses both opportunities and challenges. It is crucial to adapt to these changes and use this knowledge to build a sustainable future. Whether it means scaling back on heavy labor or embracing new financial realities, the journey continues. As the industry evolves, so too do our approaches and our ability to adapt enhances our resilience.
