The Evolution of Names: Colonial Canada
Half of us call it Canada while the other 50 per cent call it erm just a mo Canada.
Canada
Liberated. After we stopped the French colonising the western coastline in the 1700’s after declaring their intentions to create New France as they called it.
We call Canada its name Canada! Peoples of Great Britain settled in America and Canada and called their settlements after their home town/ country. Hence you get “New” York after the main town in the shire of York - as logic dictates Yorkshire where I live. You get New England etc.
In Canada, you got the Scottish landing in a mostly French settlement hence not New Scotland but Nova Scotia. There is a Hull in Canada too where I am writing from, but not New Hull!!
I am sure more geographers can fill you in on the rest…
A Historical Timeline
Ah, I think I can and this one… wait for it, North America. Then The Canadas as there used to be two. Then The Dominion of Canada. Finally, Canada.
Parkiamebt’s Notable Terminology
British North America. Not surprising Parkiamebit termed the newly captured French colony “Quebec” as in that intolerable “Quebec Act.”
But don't let that discourage you from discovering the land of Anne Murray and its frozen bits.
