The Mutual Respect Between Navy SEALs and Green Berets: Beyond Rivalry

The Mutual Respect Between Navy SEALs and Green Berets: Beyond Rivalry

It is a widely known fact that there is always a healthy amount of rivalry between different military branches. There is often pranking and badgering, often to the point of physical conflict. However, for two apex predator organizations such as Navy SEALs and Green Berets, this rivalry exists in a more mutual and grudging respect.

Training and Expertise: The Same Allegiances

Both SEALs and Green Berets are highly trained and of the highest cerebral capability. Though they may have different field Special Operations Forces (SOF) missions and training environments, they understand that they are working towards the same common goal. They respect each other's capabilities and might one day have to fight alongside each other in combat zones. For them, the true rivalry isn't about who is better, but more about the opportunity to challenge each other in a non-lethal manner—until the bullets start flying, and then it's 'all together.'

Differences in Mindset and Philosophy

While speaking from my personal experience, I know a couple of SEALs who are great guys, both humble and unassuming. Unfortunately, there are also SEALs who couldn't be more different, described as the total opposite. A few SEALs follow the Navy's doctrine of self-publicity and have grandiose notions of their own capabilities. However, in contrast, many Green Berets couldn't care less about what SEALs think of them. Similarly, some Green Berets can also exhibit arrogance, although this is not the majority. Nobody is perfect, and individuals from any military branch can come with unique personalities and attitudes.

The Nature of Competition and Resilience

For both SKs and Green Berets, the nature of competition and the reality of life in the field mean that they are often too busy with their duties and missions to worry about what other SOF organizations are doing. They have better things to focus on than schoolyard antics. Sure, they might jest and mock each other, but ultimately, the rivalry is a familiar and almost comforting dynamic among close-knit groups. The Navy SEALs famous line, 'The only easy day was yesterday,' reflects the enduring character of the SEALs—that no matter how difficult things seem today, there will always be another challenge to face, just like yesterday's.

Personal Experience: A Unique Perspective

From a personal standpoint, I am fortunate to have experienced both roles. I was one of the lucky few to be accepted into BUD/S while already being a Green Beret, and I had the privilege of completing only the 28-week BUD/S training, as I had already completed the Sniper and Language courses in the Special Forces (SF). This experience allowed me to appreciate the commonality and respect between different branches of the military, despite the differences in their specializations.

While the rivalry between SEALs and Green Berets is real, it's not the defining characteristic of these elite forces. Instead, it's their mutual respect and understanding that truly sets them apart. The battles of wits and words may forever be a part of their culture, but their shared dedication to service and mission success is what truly unites them. In the end, these individuals are part of a larger family that has the capability to adapt and respond to any threat the world may present.
