Sometimes, what you perceive as a disturbing encounter can turn out to be a harmless misunderstanding. Take my grandmother’s experience, for example. As I tried to calm her down, she gestured to the nearby bed where a small mouse appeared to be perched. Evidently freaked out, I quickly informed her, but when I returned with a glass of water, she wasn't where I left her. I found her in her bedroom, banging on the table with a stick. This person or rather, this entity, is a stranger to us, and its presence is both intriguing and slightly terrifying. During the night, this visitor usually disappears, only to reappear before sunrise. It’s particularly intolerant to sunlight and sometimes even more numerous than my eleven cats. On a few occasions, they have even turned up in our bed, making for an unforgettably cold sleep!

Despite the surreal nature of these visits, the entity has become something of a silent, observing presence in our household. This eerie companion adds a sense of the unknown to the otherwise familiar scenes of our daily life, making it a fascinating entity to observe and ponder.

The Bizarre Plumbing Fixtures

My kitchen water fountain and the urinal in the main bathroom have always been source of amusement for guests. Fitted by a plumber who enjoyed the satisfaction of solving unconventional challenges, these fixtures have a unique story behind their installation.

During the construction of our house, we guided the plumber to install our special fixtures, including a water fountain in the kitchen and a urinal in the men's bathroom. However, the installation team encountered a major challenge when they discovered that the urinal was designed for an 8-inch cinder block wall, not the 2x4 stud wall in our home. This meant that they had to tear down the completed wall, alter several 2x4 studs, and then rebuild it, all to accommodate the urinal.

Despite the inconvenience, the end result has been a strange yet fascinating conversation piece, reminding us of the unique details that make our home stand out.

The Alligator Head on the Desk

Another peculiarity in my home is an alligator head mounted on my husband's roll-top desk. This unusual souvenir from a trip to Florida, though less scary than the live alligators we encountered sunning near a nature reserve, remains a quirky and intriguing feature of our workspace. Displayed proudly as a memento of adventure and exploration, this piece of decor stands out as a talking point in many of our guests’ discussions, adding a touch of excitement to our otherwise ordinary days.
