The Value of an Engineering Internship: Insights from Havells India
As an engineering student in the Indian context, an internship at a company like Havells India was indeed a fantastic opportunity for personal and professional development. This experience not only provided me with insight into the real-world application of engineering principles but also helped me understand the operational dynamics of a large manufacturing company. In this article, I will share my experience and the lessons learned during my 6-week internship at Havells India.
Understanding the Significance of an Engineering Internship
The role of an engineering internship is crucial for any student aiming to transition from academic knowledge to practical application. Unfortunately, in many cases, internships are misunderstood or simply seen as a form of industrial training that can be easily purchased. However, the true value of an internship lies in hands-on experience and exposure to real-world challenges.
Internship vs. Industrial Training
It is important to differentiate between an internship and industrial training. Here are two key indicators:
Paid Internship: Core private engineering companies that sincerely offer internships typically pay their interns a monthly salary ranging from 50,000 to 80,000 rupees. This implies that the company is genuinely investing in your development. Fee-Based Industrial Training: If you are required to pay for the application fee and do not receive any compensation, then you are more likely dealing with an industrial training program. The well-paid engineering internships are usually offered through campus placement at some of the top-15 Indian BTech colleges. These internships provide students with the opportunity to work on live projects, gain practical experience, and understand the industry's expectations.
Experience at Havells India
During my 6-week internship at Havells India, I was part of the Research and Development (RD) department. This experience was particularly enriching, as it involved working on a live project from start to finish. The project's goal was to develop a new product, which involved several stages of the manufacturing process, from moulding to final product creation.
One of the key aspects of the internship was getting familiar with the entire manufacturing process. This included understanding the efficiency and quality measures implemented by Havells to ensure product excellence. The management techniques learned were invaluable, as they provided a glimpse into best practices for increasing productivity and quality control in a manufacturing environment.
Working in a department like RD also provided a unique perspective on the RD process. From brainstorming ideas to finalizing designs, each step of the project was meticulously executed. While the project did not meet the cost standards required for manufacturing in this instance, it was a valuable learning experience nonetheless.
Being part of the team that completed the project was rewarding, as it reinforced the belief that hard work and dedication can lead to successful outcomes. Although the prototype could not be implemented due to cost constraints, the experience itself provided a genuine taste of working at a multinational corporation (MNC).
Research and Development (RD) at Core Private Companies
The RD department at Havells India was one of the highlights of my internship. Here, I learned how innovative ideas are transformed into practical products. The process involved:
Idea Generation: Conceiving new product ideas and conducting feasibility studies. Prototype Development: Designing and creating prototypes to test the concept. Testing and Validation: Conducting rigorous testing to ensure the product meets quality and safety standards. Manufacturing: Optimizing the production process to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness.Gaining experience in these stages was invaluable, as it provided insights into the meticulous nature of the product development process.
Conclusion: The Benefits of a Well-Rated Engineering Internship
Overall, my internship at Havells India was a truly enriching experience. It not only helped me understand the inner workings of a manufacturing company but also provided a taste of working at an MNC. The practical knowledge gained from this experience will undoubtedly be beneficial in my future career as a professional engineer.
For Indian engineering students, it is essential to seek internships that provide true learning opportunities rather than mere industrial training certificates. These well-rated internships are often offered through campus placements and can significantly enhance your skill set and career prospects.
