Would You Ever Get a Cat? Lessons from Taking in a Stray

Recently, a cat named Morle, a street-smart feline, found her way into my life through my local pub. This experience not only deepened my appreciation for felines but also prompted me to reflect on whether I would ever consider adopting a cat.

Starting the Journey: Morle’s Struggle

One evening, towards the end of a quiet night at the pub, a small, frightened cat bounded in, apparently having a run-in with some local wildlife. Before long, she calmed down and revealed herself as a demonstrably affectionate, trusting, and outgoing specimen. A staff member at the pub, who works at a reputable local pet store, took her in temporarily. However, due to the already zoo-like conditions in their apartment, they were unable to keep Morle permanently.

Adoption Efforts and Discovery

Upon bringing Morle to a vet, it was discovered that she was not microchipped. This led to the owners posting fliers and notices on various online platforms, such as Facebook and dedicated pet websites, in hopes of reuniting Morle with her original family. My heart went out to her, and I offered to take her in if a suitable new owner couldn’t be found.

Three weeks passed, and it seemed like I would indeed need to welcome a new companion into our household. Just when the adoption process seemed destined for success, Morle’s original owner finally showed up. Apparently, Morle had traveled quite a distance from her home, coming a decent way in the five to six weeks she had been on the streets.

Reflections on Adopting a Cat

I am not particularly enamored with cats. I tend to avoid getting one unless my life situation changes significantly. Currently, I live in a major city, navigating a bustling schedule and a tight budget, which makes adding a pet quite challenging. However, the thought of a cat in dire need of a home changed my perspective.

Were I faced with such a situation again, I would not be fundamentally opposed to taking in a cat like Morle. In fact, I might find myself so enamored with her, taking her in, that I wouldn’t be able to resist the temptation of love. Cats have a way of melting our hearts and becoming a cherished part of our lives.

Conclusion: The Call of the Feline

The adoption journey of Morle taught me that sometimes, life presents opportunities and challenges that lead us to unexpected places. While I may not be a fervent cat lover, the experience of taking in Morle has left me with an open heart, ready to embrace a cat that truly needs a home.
