Rediscovering Unusual Fun: From Mennonite Bicycling to Poetry

Sharing a picturesque city with a vibrant Mennonite community has brought me closer to appreciating the unique aspects of their culture. This community, centered around Dutch-style restaurants and furniture shops, is home to chefs and skilled craft makers. They are known for their free spirit and, interestingly, have chosen not to own cars, relying instead on bicycles and electric pedal-assist adult trikes. Growing up without a car myself, I found it fascinating how readily they adapt to this way of life.

The opening of a northern extension to the local rail trail and a protected bike lane has bridged the gap between the Mennonite community and local cyclists. This has led to a unique opportunity for cultural exchange and personal growth. Exploring local markets and meeting community members has enriched my understanding of their culture, which was formative in my youthful years.

A Fresh Start: Writing Again

Earlier this year, I reignited an old passion—writing. Having been a balladeer and poet in my youth, I had the privilege of having three books published in the 1980s. However, life took me in different directions, and I ceased writing and performing. But now, the urge to create has resurfaced, and it feels like embarking on a new journey. Contributing to this article is a testament to my renewed commitment to my art.

Spending Time with the Young Ones: Activity Books Fun

Another form of unusual fun for me has been engaging with my almost 5-year-old daughter. We participate in activity books together, which might not initially seem appealing for adults but quickly become enjoyable through the eyes of a child. These activities not only provide a creative outlet but also deepen the bond between us.

Through these activities and my renewed journey with Mennonite culture and poetry, I've discovered that there are always new and enriching experiences just waiting to be explored.
